My birthday was an absolutely glorious day. It got up into the 80′s and there was a breeze to blow through your hair, birds singing and flowers blooming everywhere. It felt like all the world was delighting in the sunshine. :)

And last but not least.. everyone who gave to my charity:water birthday campaign, THANK YOU! It means the world to me! You are saving lives! iPhoneography life catchup

Hello blogsphere! We have not fallen off the face of the earth – though judging by the last time I’ve updated this blog, we have.  We’ve been excitingly busy and this post is all about catching you up!

IMG_6909

Spring is finally, finally coming to visit us. This winter just wouldn’t give up. It’s terrible, but I’m getting used to easy breezy over-with-quickly winters of North Carolina. This one seemed to last forever.. but I think we finally do have spring.IMG_6910

So I celebrate with summer skirts! This one makes me want to ride a little bike around Europe.

IMG_6905

And a soft serve cone! I don’t remember the last time I had one of these.. and I felt like a giddy little kid.

IMG_6896

IMG_6897

John’s family came up for a weekend.. and it was actually warm enough to go on a little hike!

IMG_4829

And of course we spend lots of time hanging at our favorite “local” coffeeshop – Smelly Cat in Noda. It’s about 30 min drive but that’s not too far for this amazing place.IMG_4849

Sometimes we even host a service via online campus from Smelly Cat.. :) IMG_4885

And last but not least, EASTER!

IMG_7109

Easter at our church is a huge celebration.. watching people receive new life in Christ. It’s the best way to celebrate Easter.

IMG_4900

IMG_7111

A cute little Easter basket from my mom with a boy and girl bunny.. :)

IMG_7107

IMG_4911

Sarah made the most adorable eggs in a nest for dinner – hardboiled eggs in pasta. Adorable AND delicious. :)

IMG_7120
My happy Easter outfit..
IMG_7104

IMG_7118

It was a rainy Easter morning, so our sunrise service had to be indoors. But that didn’t stop the sunrise.. the orange lights slowly made their way up through the service, with the rays beaming out, I think it was the most beautiful unreal sunrise ever.
IMG_4904Here’s how I described the weekend in a nugget on FB.

“What better way to celebrate Easter weekend than with 6 incredible services, full of awe filled worship, anointed messages, people giving their lives to Christ for the first time, (including at least two people via online campus!) people re-dedicating their lives and person after person taking the plunge and celebrating new life in Christ by baptism! My weekend was so full of happy tears, chills and ferocious clapping and screaming and laughing and celebrating. Jesus is alive friends, because I just spent a weekend watching Him resurrect people.”

2013 adventures in the making

So I’m sure you all have noticed, but the blog was a bit abandoned. We needed to do a revamp, because a few months back we realized we are not wedding and portrait photographers, and that is what the website was totally geared towards. It takes a lot of time to work on a website and we were exceedingly busy and so I let the blog slide to the background. I didn’t want to be posting when our website was still “falsely advertising”, so I haven’t been sharing whats going on in our lives in the last few months! We finally are working on it and though its not quite finished it’s close enough to resume blogging.

I’m just going to back up to the beginning of the year, otherwise there will be way too much catchup to do.

January pretty much started with our two year anniversary getaway. John and I went to a beautifully adorable little cabin outside of Asheville for around five days. It was perfectly lovely. Sitting by the fire, reading and reading books, soaking in the hot tub, wandering Asheville, visiting our favorite restaurants and shops, and just spending some much needed quality time alone. :)

Here is the lovely aforementioned cabin:

IMG_0032

The last morning we were there we had a little dusting of snow! We were so delighted and it totally added to the charm.

IMG_0023_HDR

We discovered this cafe that served international vegetarian cuisine – and it was out of this world delicious.

IMG_6395

Our TOMS warming by the fire as we read on the couch.  :)

IMG_6376

And we could never go to Asheville without visiting one of our very favorite coffee shops – Waking Life -

IMG_6358

Or trying out new coffee shops. This adorable little shop was inside of this charming London double decker bus!

IMG_6400One of my favorite shops in Asheville is The Chocolate Fetish. I’m pretty sure they make the best truffles in the world.

IMG_6406

Did I mention we spent a lot of time in coffee shops? :)

IMG_6415

I’ve started an adventure this spring – to walk 500 miles in just 90 days to raise $1,000 to build a well in Ethiopia. It feels crazy and overwhelming and sometimes impossible, but I know that when God lays an adventure on your heart, He gives you the means to do it. :) So a lot of my photos have been on walks and hikes and wanderings I’ve been taking in the last couple of months. You can read more about my campaign to build a well by clicking HERE.

photo-23

Sometimes I have a hiking/walking buddy, which I absolutely adore, because that always makes the miles go by much faster and because hiking with a buddy is just infinitely more awesome than hiking alone.

photo-24

TOMS love to be walking buddies, too. :)

photo-20

My mom and I go hiking once a week. We try to get away into the mountains when we can but that’s not always possible because of the drives. So, sometimes we like to just hike around Lake Norman, which is so beautiful in its own way. Water is gorgeous, moving, powerful, terrifying, soothing and calming all at once. I love being around water, in water, and on water more than I can describe.
IMG_0992

As Bilbo Baggins sings, “The Road goes ever on and on, down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, and I must follow, if I can, pursuing it with eager feet, until it joins some larger way, where many paths and errands meet. And whither then? I cannot say.”

IMG_0973

One of my favorite hikes we’ve done so far was up King’s Pinnacle. It was a short little hike but oh so lovely. We even gained some elevation and got a bit of a view at the top! Being from the West, we yearn after views in the wooded mountains of North Carolina.

IMG_0053

IMG_0061

It even had a little tiny scramble at the top where there was no trail anymore, just a pile of boulders.

IMG_6531

We had a fun little family reunion around Valentines with John’s family. His sister and her husband and his mom and youngest brother all got to meet up here for a weekend. Sadly his dad wasn’t able to make it but other than that it was the first time the whole family was together since October. It was short but really sweet.

Of course we had to hit up our lovely Summit coffee shop in Davidson, as his entire family are avid coffee lovers. And no, don’t worry, that’s not thin coffee, that is lemongrass tea in my cup. :)

IMG_6545  IMG_6571

It was really fun reconnecting with them again and just spending some time together. Especially with Ruth and Mahlon because they don’t make it down very often. Oh and here I am clutching my adored Valentines gift from John – a new smoothie blender!

IMG_6573

Another highlight this month was spending an afternoon shooting at Lake Norman with my dear friend, the marvelous Samantha from Samantha Laffoon Photography.  Check out her gorgeous photos- and if you need a wedding or portrait photographer in the Mooresville/Huntersville area, I highly recommend her. Oh and my adorable little sister came with us too, shooting some gorgeous photos on her brand new iPod touch. She’s sure it takes better photos than her Canon Rebel and after browsing through the shots she got, I’m thinking I agree. Pretty awesome little camera on that iPod. :p

IMG_6597
IMG_0097

Lake Norman has the cutest little seashells on the shoreline! I almost felt like I was at the beach. Just give me some surf, salt, and ocean breeze and voila.

IMG_0113

I’ve always loved capturing the little details. I’m not sure why, but details intrigue me. Maybe its because you have to really stop and notice. And there is so much beauty just a glance away. So often we breeze through life without noticing those little things. And yet God has created so much beauty in the tiniest little places.

IMG_0127  IMG_0132

IMG_0159

My latest adventure with my Mom was to the Reedy Creek Nature Preserve barely outside of Charlotte. It was so amazing to feel out in the wild, surrounded by trees and dirt and rocks under your feet, just moments from Charlotte. Escaping into nature is so good for the soul – it’s a soul detox.

IMG_6620

photo-31

IMG_6631

It was cold and lightly rained on us nearly the whole time, but that only made it a little more exciting. It also made for an abandoned preserve – so we nearly owned the place all day. It was lovely and peaceful and quiet.

IMG_6605

photo-33

There was even this awesome old house from the 1700′s or so. It was crazy imagining what it would’ve been like to actually settle there. Those pioneers were so incredibly hardcore. For real.

IMG_6665

Then spring came! It was 70 degrees, the sun was shining so bright and warm, the beautiful little pink blossoms are all blooming by the pool and it was just absolutely delightful.

IMG_6643

Then not only half a week later, it SNOWED! I’m just saying, this is the weirdest climate I have ever lived in.

IMG_6662

It was amazing to have snow. I grew up in the mountains of Colorado where you get feet of snow for months on end, you have to dig out your car in May sometimes, and every once in a while you get a blizzard in June. To say I was delighted about the snow is an understatement.

IMG_6652

IMG_6660My dear friend Rebekah and I were stuck inside working the Online Campus at church, but we just had to dash outside for a few moments and marvel in it. The following photos of me are taken by Rebekah. You can check out her blog by clicking HERE. She’s an incredibly talented artist so please take a moment to awe over her work. :)

Life is short. Take a moment to notice the beauty around you. Breathe in. Feel. LOVE.

Peace – Bethany xoxo

So close, yet so far away.

I love details.. I love the tiny lines, the tiny specks, the intense color. Things you have to look at really closely to notice.. beauty waiting to be seen. To stop and take that second look, to study a little more closely. I think God loves detail.. I think he makes it so that we don’t just pass by and glance at his creation but actually stop for a moment to really look at it. To really enjoy it. If you’re not looking for it, you’ll miss it. If you’re focused on things you need to do, places to go, problems weighing you down and just glance at the world around you.. you won’t see it. I think he wants us to search it out. To seek it. And that’s why he hides it. He wants us to take the focus off of ourselves and problems and such, and focus on beauty.. His creation.. singing it’s praises to their Maker.

Birthday, cupcakes, tulips and… a parrot?

My birthday was on the 10th, and my family loves birthdays. We seriously do. It’s an event, a celebration.. time to be together and have fun.. do things we don’t normally do. My family really went all out for me and it made me feel so loved.
They know how much I adore cupcakes.. so that was the theme. And spring. Tulips.. hyacinths. :)

The name places were real tulips in miniature pots. The “dirt” was chocolate bunches. I probably ate a 1/4 of my dirt before dessert.

We played Yahtzee. I got second! And I never even got a yahtzee. And here’s where the Parrot comes in. See him on my dad’s back? His name is Tarzan.

He’s not very smart. He dances though. Makes you laugh like a fool cuz it looks so funny and cute. He’s a show off.
Like I said, they know my love for cupcakes. Check out the wrapping paper! Its just edible. :)

My cake. My littlest sister made it.. isn’t is beautiful?

All these pictures are iPhone.. as I forgot my camera at home. I’m starting to realize I do that a lot. =/ Anyway.. I had such a wonderful party with my amazing family.. I hope you all are blessed to have a family who loves you like mine does me.
Keep calm and have a cupcake!

life bursting forth.

one of the best things about spring is how the greens push their way out of the dirt and burst into vibrant life. i look forward to it every year and this year was no exception. so when i saw that it was happening, i was so excited to create some photos of it.. and it just so happened that the pink blossoms are starting to fall off the tree right above. beautiful.

damp earth and new life.. color and sunshine.. spring is a beautiful thing. here’s the catch.. it’s still winter! i think north carolina has it’s seasons mixed up. but i’ll just enjoy it as it comes. yesterday i sat out by the pool for awhile drinking passion iced tea and feeling the sunshine and it made me very excited about when i can splash into the water! i felt the water and almost hollered, it’s still freezing. maybe not just yet… =}

“..he dawns on them like the morning light, like the sun shining forth on a cloudless morning, like rain that makes grass to sprout from the earth.” 2 Samuel 23:4

maybe that’s one reason we love spring so much. because it’s somewhere we can see and feel traces of God. dawning upon us like light.. refreshing us like the rain. making us beautiful.
soak it up. enjoy every flower. feel the sun on your face. listen to the rain. and be in love with the one who is making it all beautiful..

[Ps. the photo at the top of the post is also my photo of the day from yesterday.]

beauty in the rain.

yesterday was one of those rainy days. not the kind that have a torrential downpour and then it’s sunshine again. but the kind that it just drizzles all day long. dark clouds and damp earth and raindrops on everything. the air is humid and a little cold and the sky seems to be so close.. as if it’s trying to hold you in an embrace.
i love days like that. they make me want to sit at a coffeeshop and read. or talk to friends. and thats exactly what i did yesterday. i finished reading a book called “crazy love” by francis chan. and i’m going to share a little bit of it with you because it’s just that good.

“A person who is obsessed with Jesus is more concerned with his or her character than comfort. Obsessed people know that true joy doesn’t depend on circumstances or environment; it is a gift that must be chosen and cultivated, a gift that ultimately comes from God (James 1:2-4).” -Crazy Love, by Francis Chan

“A person who is obsessed with Jesus knows that the best thing he can do is to be faithful to his Savior in every aspect of his life, continually saying, “Thank you!” to God. An obsessed person knows there can never be intimacy if he is always trying to pay God back or work hard enough to be worthy. He revels in his role of child and friend of God.” -Crazy Love, by Francis Chan

i feel like i could quote the whole book on here, but i won’t. why don’t you just read it and then you’ll understand why? :) Crazy Love. love is crazy. especially when you think of it that an all-powerful, perfect, holy and incredible God choses to love us, relentlessly, unselfishly, and unendingly? that is crazy.

what if we dared to love him back? what if we dared to open up our hearts and accept that crazy love he offers so freely and desires so deeply to give? what if we stopped trying to earn his love, but actually just stopped and accepted it? not trying to prove anything? realizing that we could never, ever, ever earn it.

“There comes a moment when people who have been dabbling in religion (Man’s search for God), suddenly draw back. Supposing we really found Him? We never meant for it to come to that! Worse still, supposing He had found us?” -C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

are we scared of finding God? scared of Him finding us? of showing him the raw core of us?
“People who are obsessed (with Jesus) are raw with God; they do not attempt to mask the ugliness of their sins or their failures. Obsessed people don’t put it on for God; He is their safe place, where they can be at peace.” -Francis Chan, Crazy Love

the only way we could love him back like that – crazy, obsessively, is by accepting his love into our beings, our souls, the core of who we are. and he is just waiting for us to do it. for real.

We love, because He first loved us. 1 John 4:19

don’t be scared to accept that love. i know it can be hard sometimes. to accept love. especially from a God that big. but you’ll never regret it if you do. never.

project 365: days 55-57

i haven’t posted for a couple days, so i’m catching up! this was my photo of the day from saturday. it was a bouquet i bought for a valentines party i had.. and it kept lasting and lasting so beautifully! this was after it was already a week old. isn’t it beautiful?

i love trees. so much. they captivate me. and this is one of my absolute favorite trees. i call it “my” tree. it’s actually two trees, twisting into one. i pass it every time i drive to my parents house and yesterday morning i finally stopped and created some photos of it. this one is my favorite but i have a few others i want to show you guys, too. =}
yesterday was one of those drizzly, rainy days.. dark skies and moist earth. i love days like that.. and yesterday was no exception. i’ve got some pretty photos coming up, soon!
