Welcome to Moab

After leaving Ruidoso we dropped off my mom at the ABQ airport as she couldn’t stay for the whole trip. We had one last fun breakfast in the airport with her before she left, at the delicious Black Mesa coffee company.

From there we were UTAH bound!IMG_7937

On the drive we stopped at this little town called Cuba in New Mexico for some deliciously roasted Pinon nuts and some fresh made Navajo frybread. SO GOOD.IMG_7939

As you approach Moab, Utah.. there is a beautiful arch right along the highway standing there to welcome you.IMG_1601

So of course we had to jump out of the car and run up to greet it.. Wilson Arch.IMG_1610

There is no where I feel quite as much at home as I do in Moab, Utah. Colorado is a close second.. but there is something about the slickrock red canyons and blue, blue sky and dry warm air that makes me feel like I’m home. IMG_1678_HDR

We ate dinner at the amazing Moab brewery.

We got to stay at some dear friends house.. who sadly were out of town. This is the view from their back porch.IMG_7954

Of course we had to hit up some local green chile cheese tamales and blue chips and green chile sauce!!!IMG_7961

And here is happy me in the town of my birth. :) IMG_7953

I teased you last time.. but I promise this time Arches is coming up next! :)

The Land of Enchantment

Travel! Oh the joy of living out of a suitcase and flying over beautiful scenery and eating different food and breathing in fresher air.

IMG_7829

Best way to start out a trip.

IMG_7825

While flying to New Mexico our plane was delayed and we were going to miss our connection, so we got rerouted – through Minnesota! Haha. It felt very out of the way but ended up being worth it because I stumbled across some killer coffee. IMG_7833

New Mexico! My mom and brother and sister and I got to spend a week in the Southwest visiting family and places we love. Our first stop when we arrived in Albuquerque was to hit up our favorite restaurant in the world – El Pinto! There is no food in the world like New Mexican, and El Pinto does New Mexican best. :)

To the theater!

Last month my sister Sarah had her first ballet recital. She has only been taking ballet for about half a year and already she was a vision of beauty. Ballet flows through her .. IMG_0753

She also helps teach the little “Angelina Ballerinas”… :) ballet

IMG_0806

IMG_0792

I was so proud of her! I cannot wait to see where she will go with this gift.

IMG_0766Both my sisters also performed in a high school production of Fiddler on the Roof! If you haven’t heard of it, it is a musical about a story of a Jewish family set in Tsarist Russia in 1905. It’s a beautiful story about family, centered on a man named Tevye and his five daughters, about his struggle to maintain tradition and religious values while the modern world starts tugging at his family. It’s about the choices he makes out of love to his daughters, learning to let go and let them choose their own paths, and ultimately the family is forced to leave Russia because of their faith. It’s filled with laughter, love, tears, beauty, sorrow and joy.

IMG_0831

IMG_0841

IMG_0848

Sarah played the role of Tzeitel, the oldest daughter who seeks to find permission to marry the man she loves rather than the man the matchmaker chooses for her.
IMG_0866

Rachelle picked up roles throughout the play as well as dancing and singing in the choir.

IMG_0871The story is filled with celebrations..

IMG_0875

Dancing!IMG_0878

IMG_0884

IMG_0899

Hilarity ..IMG_0906

And sorrow.IMG_0912

The entire cast did an incredible job and the crowd was moved to tears as well as laughter on more than one occasion. :)
IMG_0913

And finally the family is forced to leave their home because of their Jewish faith.. yet with hope to find a life elsewhere.

IMG_0917Its a beautiful, emotion filled play, and it was incredible to get to watch my sisters carry it out so wonderfully.

Summer breeze.. makes me feel fine..

IMG_0655

I have never been as excited for summer to come as I have been this year. I’m not really sure why. But for months now I’ve been dreaming and longing for warm weather and sunshine and green grass and color and new life.

IMG_7314

Summer is happiness. Sunshine spreading all over everyone and flowers popping up everywhere sharing their exquisite colors. It is about friendship, about love, about being with the ones God has brought into your life.

I know it is not officially summer yet. But it has arrived already where I live.. and this year I am welcoming it with open arms.

It think what delights me about summer more than anything else is new life. Everywhere around me new life is happening. Baby birds, flowers blooming, grass turning from the drab brownish color it dons in winter to a vibrant, soft lime green in summer. Everywhere is an image of Life and an image of the One who breathed life into being. When I sit outside on a warm summer day and feel the cool breeze playing with my hair and hearing the birds sing their melodious songs.. I believe in the depths of my heart that there are second chances. That there is always new life for the asking.

IMG_7310

My dream for this summer is to spend as much time as possible out of doors. Basking in the beauty that God has brought to life.

IMG_7326Chilling with people that I love and that love me and enjoying their presence.. not taking them for granted.

IMG_7312

Breathing in the colors, the vibrance, the life all around me.

IMG_7288

Soaking up the rays of sunlight that streak across my path.

IMG_7331Diving into life heart first.

IMG_7296Loving as I have been loved.

IMG_4976Serving as I have been served.

My dream for the next 2 1/2 months is this. To raise $22,000 to bring clean water to a community in Ethiopia. Because I want to give, to inspire, to love my family around this big, beautiful world. Because my Jesus lived like that. You can join in my dream to help bring clean water, and a new life, to some beautiful people by clicking HERE.

Peace and love,

Bethany

PS. I so love this song:

She climbed till she saw

stone mountain

To see a view that can only be seen after pushing through a hike, running out of breath, wiping sweat off your forehead, that is pleasure. The sky is that much more blue, the clouds so much fluffier, and the panorama stretching out before you so much more magnificent.

2013 adventures in the making

So I’m sure you all have noticed, but the blog was a bit abandoned. We needed to do a revamp, because a few months back we realized we are not wedding and portrait photographers, and that is what the website was totally geared towards. It takes a lot of time to work on a website and we were exceedingly busy and so I let the blog slide to the background. I didn’t want to be posting when our website was still “falsely advertising”, so I haven’t been sharing whats going on in our lives in the last few months! We finally are working on it and though its not quite finished it’s close enough to resume blogging.

I’m just going to back up to the beginning of the year, otherwise there will be way too much catchup to do.

January pretty much started with our two year anniversary getaway. John and I went to a beautifully adorable little cabin outside of Asheville for around five days. It was perfectly lovely. Sitting by the fire, reading and reading books, soaking in the hot tub, wandering Asheville, visiting our favorite restaurants and shops, and just spending some much needed quality time alone. :)

Here is the lovely aforementioned cabin:

IMG_0032

The last morning we were there we had a little dusting of snow! We were so delighted and it totally added to the charm.

IMG_0023_HDR

We discovered this cafe that served international vegetarian cuisine – and it was out of this world delicious.

IMG_6395

Our TOMS warming by the fire as we read on the couch.  :)

IMG_6376

And we could never go to Asheville without visiting one of our very favorite coffee shops – Waking Life -

IMG_6358

Or trying out new coffee shops. This adorable little shop was inside of this charming London double decker bus!

IMG_6400One of my favorite shops in Asheville is The Chocolate Fetish. I’m pretty sure they make the best truffles in the world.

IMG_6406

Did I mention we spent a lot of time in coffee shops? :)

IMG_6415

I’ve started an adventure this spring – to walk 500 miles in just 90 days to raise $1,000 to build a well in Ethiopia. It feels crazy and overwhelming and sometimes impossible, but I know that when God lays an adventure on your heart, He gives you the means to do it. :) So a lot of my photos have been on walks and hikes and wanderings I’ve been taking in the last couple of months. You can read more about my campaign to build a well by clicking HERE.

photo-23

Sometimes I have a hiking/walking buddy, which I absolutely adore, because that always makes the miles go by much faster and because hiking with a buddy is just infinitely more awesome than hiking alone.

photo-24

TOMS love to be walking buddies, too. :)

My mom and I go hiking once a week. We try to get away into the mountains when we can but that’s not always possible because of the drives. So, sometimes we like to just hike around Lake Norman, which is so beautiful in its own way. Water is gorgeous, moving, powerful, terrifying, soothing and calming all at once. I love being around water, in water, and on water more than I can describe.
IMG_0992

As Bilbo Baggins sings, “The Road goes ever on and on, down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, and I must follow, if I can, pursuing it with eager feet, until it joins some larger way, where many paths and errands meet. And whither then? I cannot say.”

IMG_0973

One of my favorite hikes we’ve done so far was up King’s Pinnacle. It was a short little hike but oh so lovely. We even gained some elevation and got a bit of a view at the top! Being from the West, we yearn after views in the wooded mountains of North Carolina.

IMG_0053

IMG_0061

It even had a little tiny scramble at the top where there was no trail anymore, just a pile of boulders.

IMG_6531

We had a fun little family reunion around Valentines with John’s family. His sister and her husband and his mom and youngest brother all got to meet up here for a weekend. Sadly his dad wasn’t able to make it but other than that it was the first time the whole family was together since October. It was short but really sweet.

Of course we had to hit up our lovely Summit coffee shop in Davidson, as his entire family are avid coffee lovers. And no, don’t worry, that’s not thin coffee, that is lemongrass tea in my cup. :)

IMG_6545  IMG_6571

It was really fun reconnecting with them again and just spending some time together. Especially with Ruth and Mahlon because they don’t make it down very often. Oh and here I am clutching my adored Valentines gift from John – a new smoothie blender!

IMG_6573

Another highlight this month was spending an afternoon shooting at Lake Norman with my dear friend, the marvelous Samantha from Samantha Laffoon Photography.  Check out her gorgeous photos- and if you need a wedding or portrait photographer in the Mooresville/Huntersville area, I highly recommend her. Oh and my adorable little sister came with us too, shooting some gorgeous photos on her brand new iPod touch. She’s sure it takes better photos than her Canon Rebel and after browsing through the shots she got, I’m thinking I agree. Pretty awesome little camera on that iPod. :p

IMG_6597
IMG_0097

Lake Norman has the cutest little seashells on the shoreline! I almost felt like I was at the beach. Just give me some surf, salt, and ocean breeze and voila.

IMG_0113

I’ve always loved capturing the little details. I’m not sure why, but details intrigue me. Maybe its because you have to really stop and notice. And there is so much beauty just a glance away. So often we breeze through life without noticing those little things. And yet God has created so much beauty in the tiniest little places.

IMG_0127  IMG_0132

IMG_0159

My latest adventure with my Mom was to the Reedy Creek Nature Preserve barely outside of Charlotte. It was so amazing to feel out in the wild, surrounded by trees and dirt and rocks under your feet, just moments from Charlotte. Escaping into nature is so good for the soul – it’s a soul detox.

IMG_6620

photo-31

IMG_6631

It was cold and lightly rained on us nearly the whole time, but that only made it a little more exciting. It also made for an abandoned preserve – so we nearly owned the place all day. It was lovely and peaceful and quiet.

IMG_6605

photo-33

There was even this awesome old house from the 1700′s or so. It was crazy imagining what it would’ve been like to actually settle there. Those pioneers were so incredibly hardcore. For real.

IMG_6665

Then spring came! It was 70 degrees, the sun was shining so bright and warm, the beautiful little pink blossoms are all blooming by the pool and it was just absolutely delightful.

IMG_6643

Then not only half a week later, it SNOWED! I’m just saying, this is the weirdest climate I have ever lived in.

IMG_6662

It was amazing to have snow. I grew up in the mountains of Colorado where you get feet of snow for months on end, you have to dig out your car in May sometimes, and every once in a while you get a blizzard in June. To say I was delighted about the snow is an understatement.

IMG_6652

IMG_6660My dear friend Rebekah and I were stuck inside working the Online Campus at church, but we just had to dash outside for a few moments and marvel in it. The following photos of me are taken by Rebekah. You can check out her blog by clicking HERE. She’s an incredibly talented artist so please take a moment to awe over her work. :)

Life is short. Take a moment to notice the beauty around you. Breathe in. Feel. LOVE.

Peace – Bethany xoxo

Oh, Christmas Tree!

My family drove up into the beautiful (little) mountains outside of Boone to pick out a Christmas tree for my mom and sisters. It was a chilly fresh morning with gorgeous light breaking out over the trees.

We loaded up into a wagon and rode up to the top to select our tree. It was bumpy and cold and way too much fun.

Binding up the tree so it would fit on the roof of the car :)
