Welcome to Moab

After leaving Ruidoso we dropped off my mom at the ABQ airport as she couldn’t stay for the whole trip. We had one last fun breakfast in the airport with her before she left, at the delicious Black Mesa coffee company.

From there we were UTAH bound!IMG_7937

On the drive we stopped at this little town called Cuba in New Mexico for some deliciously roasted Pinon nuts and some fresh made Navajo frybread. SO GOOD.IMG_7939

As you approach Moab, Utah.. there is a beautiful arch right along the highway standing there to welcome you.IMG_1601

So of course we had to jump out of the car and run up to greet it.. Wilson Arch.IMG_1610

There is no where I feel quite as much at home as I do in Moab, Utah. Colorado is a close second.. but there is something about the slickrock red canyons and blue, blue sky and dry warm air that makes me feel like I’m home. IMG_1678_HDR

We ate dinner at the amazing Moab brewery.

We got to stay at some dear friends house.. who sadly were out of town. This is the view from their back porch.IMG_7954

Of course we had to hit up some local green chile cheese tamales and blue chips and green chile sauce!!!IMG_7961

And here is happy me in the town of my birth. :) IMG_7953

White Sands!

No trip is complete without knowing the land.. without wandering through its beauty.

IMG_1115_HDRWhile in Ruidoso we got to go to White Sands National Monument for a half day! We left pretty early in the morning to as to beat the heat that reflects off the white sand from the brilliant New Mexican sun.

Tumbling down the dunes!IMG_1255

IMG_1275_HDR

White Sands is the largest collection of gypsum dunes in the world. Its the most soft, purest white sand I have ever seen.IMG_1298The best part was just being together.. having fun in a gorgeous part of God’s big beautiful world.

IMG_1424

Fun fact. Gypsum is very seldom seen in the form of sand because it is water soluble! In most climates the rain would wash it away to the sea. But these dunes are contained in a basin with no outlet, therefore when it does (seldomly) rain, the water collects in pools, then evaporates, leaving the gypsum as sand crystals!IMG_1426

Lets go to the beach!

Finally the blog is back in business! So sorry about the long stretch of silence.. we were having some blog issues over the last month. So now we have lots of catch up to do! At the beginning of last month, John and I got to spend a day at Virginia beach. It was bitter  cold and windy, but we had fun wandering around anyway. It had an abandoned feel about it which I’m sure is very rare for that beach.virginia beach

We stumbled across this adorable vintage looking amusement park.virginia beach  We ate a delicious lunch at this little crabshack on the pier. It was a lovely way to enjoy the waves crashing without the bitter cold. :)

virginia beach  virginia beach The beach is always such a treat – even when windy and cold. Hopefully next time will be full of sunshine and warm breezes and we will actually get to wear our swimsuits and get our feet wet. :) virginia beach

Coming up next to the blog – pictures of my sisters Fiddler on the Roof performances and of my sister Sarah’s ballet recital!

Roadtrip: Chicago!

A couple of weeks ago we took off for a crazy road trip up to Chicago to visit my brother.
IMG_7348

Driving late into the night.. there is something about roadtrippin after dark that is so exciting. :) IMG_7354

Morning dawned rainy and cozy..IMG_7357

COFFEE! We drove through Louisville, KY and some dear friends who used to live there recommended this amazing coffee shop called Sunergos. They roast their own beans! Absolutely delicious.

Since fall crept into the mountains…

My family drove up to Linville Gorge Wilderness to breath in the beauty of Fall. We could not have timed it more perfectly on purpose bursting onto the scene as the leaves were at the peak of their spectacular beauty. We climbed up the Hawksbill trail and broke out of the trees onto a sea, rippling and flowing with vibrant reds, yellows, oranges and so forth. If you stood on the top and did a complete 360, you would lose your breath at the magnitude of color lying beneath you. (PS. John did a 360 panorama from the top, let’s see if we can get him to do a blogpost. :) )
Of all the many, many things I miss about the Rocky Mountains, there’s nothing quite like an Appalachian Fall…

BEACH! Part 2

Part 2 of the beach trip was a little delayed, I’m sorry. :) I had a few (pleasant) unexpected things come up and didn’t have time to get these photos up on the blog to you as soon as I had wanted to! But here they finally are.

There’s something about sunrise that has a touch of magic in it. The color, the light, slowing appearing out of no where and chasing away the darkness.. creating a masterpiece over the water..

It makes your soul burst.. it makes you dance. It makes you worship the Painter.

Of course we had to get a TOMS picture in.. For every pair of TOMS shoes you buy, they give a brand new pair to a child in need.
